Sirens

These gouache sketches on paper depict an interior world accessed through intuition rather than reason.   The term siren is a reference to Greek mythology, creatures half-bird and half-woman.

Human figures, singly or grouped, are arranged with simplified elements to suggest some bleak, mental interior.  The masks the figures wear are a bridge that enables me to manifest visually my own metaphysical world in my own language.  Without the masks, I would be stuck in exterior description, a realistic portrait.

We live in a consciousness of constant change.  Half of our perception comes from the here and now, the other half relies on past experience.  Is it any wonder that we lean so strongly on memory for our reasoning?
