For years, I've been thinking about creating my own language. Let's begin with an alphabet. My alphabet is made up of found objects from nature--leaves, flowers, shells, stones, feathers, insects, bark--glued onto pieces of cardboard, inked and printed as collagraphic letter blocks.
Imagine a new, alien language where the placement and relationship between letters has meaning. Like a medieval manuscript, the text is illuminated with fabric patterns taken from old quilts: stripes, plaids or flowers. It's the visual weight of the final image that is important to me. Not too heavily chaotic, not so light it floats off the page.
This series of monotypes measures 16"w x 20"h each, with archival board, collagraphs, solvent transfers and gouache.
